Southampton are far from agreeing on a new contract with forward Ross Stewart, as the player’s representatives seek an improved renewal deal.
Southampton’s recovery from the Spygate incident has so far been built on the support of players and fans. With multiple stars like Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin committing to another promotion push, the club have enjoyed significant backing from their roster.
However, it must be noted that Southampton still have some way to go in retaining their core players this summer. The recent update on Ross Stewart’s contract renewal sums up why this task is far from complete.
Stewart’s representatives and Southampton are yet to reach an agreement over his contract extension. The valuation differences between the player’s entourage and the Saints make the deal challenging.
Radio Solent editor Adam Blackmore summed up the Ross Stewart situation, stating: “I understand his people wanting more money, and I understand Saints thinking a new two year deal on less money is realistic given his injury history and their patience with him. We’ll see what happens – could go either way.”
Southampton find themselves in problematic situation regarding Stewart
It is worth noting that Southampton’s case in renewing Ross Stewart is far from simple. This primarily stems from the differing desires of the two parties regarding the forward’s future at the club.
Notably, Southampton had the option to extend Stewart’s contract for an additional year until recently. However, the way his 2025/26 campaign unfolded kept the club in limbo, unsure whether to trigger the option for quite some time.
Until last summer, the Saints were uncertain whether the forward would be central to their plans after two injury‑riddled years at the club. But Stewart’s resurgence in Southampton’s plans following Tonda Eckert’s arrival changed everything.
Ross Stewart’s impressive second half of the season, which saw him score 9 goals, saw him win back the support of both fans and staff.

In an ideal world, Southampton would have moved to secure Stewart after witnessing his resurgent form well before the season ended. However, the club’s dramatic playoff expulsion saw them fail to extend his contract within the five‑day window following the campaign’s conclusion.
This has led Stewart’s representatives to believe the player should either be offered a fresh, improved deal or be allowed to leave for free. With the Saints unconvinced to offer Stewart such a contract, given his injury record, the two parties are currently in a standoff.
Southampton’s call on Stewart will be crucial to promotion push
It has been noted that Ross Stewart remains a key player whose future needs to be resolved as soon as possible. Based on what the club saw from him in 2026, he could be extremely valuable in Southampton’s promotion push next season.
Beyond the obvious sporting reasons, Southampton’s final decision on Stewart’s renewal could have a domino effect on their squad. Having relied on Stewart to complement Cyle Larin last summer, the Saints could lose more than just the financial hit of letting him leave for free.
Should Stewart leave, the club may need to rely on an option like Cameron Archer. While Archer has shown he could still be useful to Southampton, his inconsistent Saints spell offers little certainty. If Southampton want to look beyond both Stewart and Archer, the club will face a major rebuild in the forward line all over again.
A common saying in football is that teams shouldn’t change a winning formula. While Southampton have followed that rule by convincing loanees Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin to permanent deals, they need to do the same with Ross Stewart to keep their core intact for next season.
For now, Ross Stewart’s future is unlikely to be resolved before the World Cup campaign ends. His performances in the tournament could go a long way in shaping how Southampton approach their attempts to renew him.
