Southampton has announced Cyle Larin’s permanent signing from Mallorca and dropped a James Bree contract renewal hint in the process.
Yesterday, Southampton announced Daniel Peretz’s permanent signing from Bayern Munich for €7m. In the announcement clip, the Saints purposefully left a phone call hint in the end to suggest Cyle Larin’s permanent signing might be around the corner.
A lot of Southampton fans noticed it, and hours later it turned to be true. Cyle Larin is a Saint. The club have bought him permanently from parent club Mallorca for £2.5m which is an absolute steal for a proven goalscorer.
The 31-year-old Canadian striker scored the 1-0 Watford winner on his Southampton loan debut. Followed it by converting a penalty against Leicester City on his FA Cup debut, and later went on to score 7 times in last 11 Championship matches to bring Southampton within touching distance of automatic promotion.
Southampton announce Cyle Larin’s signing and drop James Bree hint
Just like with Daniel Peretz’s signing announcement, Southampton have dropped another hint in the recent Cyle Larin announcement clip. The 28-second clip starts with a ringing call (as a continuation of the Peretz announcement clip) to which Cyle Larin answers: “Hey, Cyle Larin here. I just want to let you guys know the news.”
Confirming his St. Mary’s stay, Larin added: “This club and the coach has given me the trust and the faith to score goals. Now, I can’t wait to do it with you guys at St. Mary’s. Let’s do it again together. See you soon.”

This time, there was no ringing phone call in the end but rather a subtle contract extension hint. The clip featured Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin’s Southampton shirts on either side of another Saints 2025/26 home shirt.
And best of all, there was a telephone beneath it. Saints fans have begun guessing it could be one of James Bree or Ross Stewart for now. Ideally, Southampton should tie both of them down to new deals beyond 2026, but this hint most likely points to James Bree’s renewal.
Southampton’s new hint screams James Bree’s contract renewal
Going by Southampton fans, the majority of them are anticipating it to be James Bree’s contract renewal. It might not be the case, but let’s be real, Ross Stewart’s Southampton injury record doesn’t make for good reading.
The “Loch Ness Drogba” scored goals for fun under Tonda Eckert but he hardly played for the Saints in the preceding 2 years. During the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons, Stewart notched only 1 goal for Southampton from 17 appearances across all competitions.
Forget that he scored only once in 2 years, but being available for only 17 matches in that duration is a terrible fitness record to be honest. Naturally, the Southampton board will be reluctant to offer Stewart a new deal immediately, until they can get the assurance of him playing atleast half of the games in a season.
Cyle Larin has been signed permanently, Cameron Archer is also waiting in the wings for a chance so expect Southampton to take their time before renewing Stewart. As such, the current contract extension hint clearly points to a new multi-year deal for James Bree. And let’s see, if Southampton drops another hint within it (possibly for Ross Stewart, who knows).
