Southampton may agree to sell Yukinari Sugawara for less than the €6m buy option amount available to Werder Bremen.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 begins in a few days, with three Southampton stars likely to appear in the biggest footballing competition. But the irony is that two of those players could leave the club soon after the tournament concludes.
This follows after Southampton find themselves in an uncomfortable position regarding Ross Stewart’s contract. With the club missing the five‑day extension period, the Saints must now convince the player to sign a fresh deal, as he will become a free agent soon.
If Stewart’s situation is complex, the other Saint in question poses an even more perplexing case. The player is Yukinari Sugawara, whom Southampton are willing to let go of despite his impressive 2025/26 loan spell in the Bundesliga.
SaintsExtra referenced a report from DeichStube on Sugawara’s situation, stating: “Southampton would ‘likely’ accept a fee lower than the €6m [£5.1m] option to buy held by Werder Bremen for Yukinari Sugawara, should the German club look to sign him permanently — but talks are yet to take place.”
Southampton opt for passive transfer strategy in Sugawara’s case
Yukinari Sugawara had one of the finest spells among the Southampton loanees sent out last summer. Soon after completing his move to Werder Bremen, he became an instant starter for the side.
Making 31 appearances while registering around 2,500 minutes of game time in the Bundesliga, Sugawara ended the campaign with six assists to his name. The Saints loanee looked effective and sharp throughout the season, operating on the right flank for Bremen.
While his season‑long performance should have earned him a permanent move, Bremen’s hesitation to trigger the €6m buy option stems from financial unwillingness to commit to such a hefty fee. The Bundesliga club want to negotiate a lower transfer sum for Sugawara’s signing.

Here, Southampton’s stance on Sugawara ought to surprise fans for valid reasons. Despite having two more years on his contract, the club may agree to a lower fee to sanction his permanent sale to Werder Bremen.
Notably, Southampton themselves spent €7m to sign Sugawara last summer. If the club agree to a fee even lower than €6m, they will incur a notable loss on the Japanese international, who might provide significant resale value later.
Can Sugawara still come in handy for Tonda Eckert’s side?
A wise decision from Southampton on Sugawara’s future would be to keep the player on the club’s books while his market value increases. Unless the club needs to generate cash flow through a necessary sale, his Saints spell shouldn’t ideally end this summer.
But amid this consideration, a lingering thought remains: could Sugawara add much more value to Southampton than a potential sale by being key in the club’s promotion push?
Southampton have seen a dearth of options in the right‑back department this season. While James Bree’s winter return from a Charlton loan changed the trajectory of their promotion push, he was the only name the Saints could rely on until the end of the campaign.
If anything, the need for a backup right‑back will only increase next season. With Elias Jelert returning to Galatasaray after a mediocre spell, and Mads Roerslev still recovering from his Achilles issue, the Saints will need a right‑back to help share Bree’s workload.
Again, the fact that even Bree’s contract renewal remains pending makes the situation even more alarming. While Southampton have hinted at being in talks with him, it is crucial they have an in‑form option like Sugawara available in the background.
Given Sugawara’s impressive 2025/26 loan spell, the Japanese international possesses the talent to win over Tonda Eckert and his staff. It remains to be seen whether he will be given a chance to impress in pre‑season or allowed to depart before even returning to St. Mary’s.
