Southampton midfielder Caspar Jander tops VfB Stuttgart’s replacement plans for €50m exit-bound star Angelo Stiller.
Southampton are wasting no time in renewing contract extensions and permanent signings to prepare for the 2026/27 Championship season. The Saints have signed Daniel Peretz for €7m, Cyle Larin for €3m and are close to agreeing fresh terms with James Bree and backup goalkeeper George Long.
With this, the defence is nearly sorted. Provided Leo Scienza stays at St. Mary’s, and a new No.10 is signed to provide competition to Finn Azaz as Dragan Solak outlined, Southampton will almost have a quality Championship attack raring to go.
Coming to midfield, that looks as an area where Southampton will look for a few sales to account for lower Championship revenues. After all, retaining every core player in the squad is next to impossible for non-Premier League clubs.
Shea Charles is being eyed by Manchester United, Everton and Leeds United among others. The midfielder has vowed to return for Southampton’s 2026 preseason but things can change anytime in the transfer market. Mateus Fernandes and Tyler Dibling’s departures in the final week of August last year are prime examples of it.
Caspar Jander top of Stuttgart’s replacement plans for €50m rated Angelo Stiller
Amidst Shea Charles transfer links, a worrying transfer update has arrived regarding Southampton midfielder Caspar Jander. Signed for €12m in 2025, Jander has become key to Tonda Eckert’s 3-man midfield setup where he is usually tasked with driving the ball further down the pitch to aid Saints forwards.
Jander and Charles are often rotated in the Championship so it’s fair to assume Southampton will find it difficult to hold onto both of them. According to a recent report from Kicker, Champions League club VfB Stuttgart are planning to sign Jander in order to replace €50m rated Germany international Angelo Stiller.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are long-term admirers of Stiller and a reported €50m asking price won’t deter them from signing Stiller. If that happens, Stuttgart will have enough cash to pay for Jander whose Saints departure might command roughly half of that amount.
Southampton might have to pick one from Shea Charles and Caspar Jander
In the second half of 2025/26, Tonda Eckert’s Southampton midfield usually consisted of Flynn Downes, Finn Azaz and one of Charles or Jander. Dragan Solak insists Azaz will be given proper competition at No.10 meaning he will stay, Downes isn’t linked with a Southampton exit to any other club.
That brings it to a direct pick from Shea Charles and Caspar Jander. Keep one, sell the other and trust rising talents like Cameron Bragg and Barnaby Williams to cover in midfield whenever needed. So, who should Saints retain?
Shea Charles is known to get frequent injuries, while Jander has a good fitness record but might fetch a lower transfer fee than selling Charles. It’s simply down to Premier League interest in Charles while a few Bundesliga teams namely, Stuttgart and Leipzig are targeting Jander.
If Southampton opts to retain both of them that will be a clear message to Tonda Eckert and the squad that Premier League promotion is the bare minimum ask for 2026/27. Let’s see what do 3 months of summer transfer window have in store for Southampton.
