Southampton technical director Johannes Spors has denied knowledge of spying in his testimony and is innocent as per the investigation conducted so far on the Spygate scandal.
Southampton’s position in the EFL’s Spygate investigation has touched new lows almost every day. While the club’s supporters were their biggest strength until the verdict, the shocking revelations have turned a vast majority of fans against the club itself.
Unsurprisingly, it’s a long way back for Southampton if they aim to regain the support they once enjoyed. However, one aspect that must have come as a silver lining for the faithful is the emerging update regarding technical director Johannes Spors.
As per journalist Matt Slater, Spors has been untouched by any serious allegations in the EFL investigation and report. As quoted by SaintsExtra, Slater said: “Johannes Spors denied all knowledge [of spying], that was his testimony on Tuesday. There is nothing in the evidence that has emerged so far that implicates him.”
Johannes Spors might be innocent in the Spygate scandal
There’s no denying that the recent revelations about Tonda Eckert’s attempts to gain an advantage over opponents have left supporters feeling betrayed. With the EFL report detailing how the manager coerced his staff to spy on rivals, fans are right to look at every Southampton figure with suspicion.
However, the EFL’s investigation has so far failed to directly link technical director Johannes Spors to the scandal. While it’s true that Southampton hired Eckert on Spors’s recommendation, his testimony and emerging reports deny that he was complicit in the manager’s actions.
It’s worth noting that CEO Phil Parsons and boss Tonda Eckert initially denied the Spygate charges. However, the duo eventually surrendered, and Eckert admitted to being the mastermind of the operation.

What distinguishes Eckert’s case from Spors’s is that the latter remains confident in his testimony. While doubts persist about whether it all really happened behind his back, Spors would have little reason to mislead the FA, given the implications that could follow.
Another sign that builds confidence in Spors’s case is his minimal presence in the EFL’s report on Southampton’s playoff expulsion. While the 12‑page report detailed the smallest of incidents that led to the punishment, Spors’s involvement in the evidence hardly counts against him.
Southampton need Spors to help through this dark phase rebuild
The Spygate scandal and the EFL’s verdict have pushed Southampton light-years behind where they could have been. Initially touted to be featuring in the playoff final against Hull, the club is now battling to revive its reputation and win back the fans’ support.
That lost trust is unlikely to be regained in a week, or two, or even a couple of months. But if there’s one man Southampton might need to cling to in order to win everyone back, it is Johannes Spors himself.
Notably, Spors arrived at Southampton during one of the club’s grim phases last season. His appointment has since seen the Saints march ahead of the situation in which the club found itself before him.
In his 15 months as technical head, Spors has had some significant wins. Credited for the successful moves of Caspar Jander, Léo Scienza, Daniel Peretz, and many others, he has broken the long, depressing streak of failed transfers that had plagued the club before his arrival.
Johannes Spors’s knowledge as a transfer market operator is among the finest in the game. With a keen eye for scouting German talent, his regime has seen the market value of several Saints rise considerably over the past season.
While the Spygate scandal has potentially undone much of the hard work from last season, Spors may have a practical plan to support the club’s finances through exceptional scouting. Even if multiple sackings occur at St. Mary’s this summer, the club should push to retain Spors in his current role.
With a history of working within multi‑club ownership structures, Spors is the man Southampton can rely on during this difficult phase. Many eyes will be on the technical director as the Saints embark on a massive rebuild starting this summer.
