£10m flop signing Sam Edozie might have saved his Southampton career with his recent message regarding the ‘Spygate’ saga.
Today is just another Saturday for Southampton fans. The ‘Spygate’ scandal and the subsequent Championship playoff final expulsion ruined what could otherwise have been a brilliant afternoon for Saints fans to potentially celebrate another Premier League promotion at Wembley.
2 years ago, Southampton lived that beautiful Wembley feeling by beating Daniel Farke’s Leeds United 1-0 thanks to an Adam Armstrong finish. Now, all that’s left to hear about Southampton is the constant spying revelations coming up, fans asking for the rightful dismissal of current board members and everyone found guilty.
And lastly, players taking to social media to post their farewell messages (well, sort of). So far, the likes of Leo Scienza, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and a few youngsters have come up with their gutted reactions and disappointment at being denied a place to compete for Premier League promotion.
All those messages contain something along the lines of “thanks for everything, Southampton fans” which clearly says they have made up their mind on leaving. Honestly, they shouldn’t be judged for it. After all, the players left no stone unturned in the playoffs semi-final and edged out Middlesbrough with a 2-1 win one week before getting brutally axed from the final.

Amidst all these player messages popping up, there is an interesting one to look out for. It’s from £10m Southampton flop Sam Edozie.
Sam Edozie’s Southampton message after ‘Spygate’ scandal
Posting on Instagram, Sam Edozie put out a motivating message both for him, the club, as well as the fans. He conveyed his current intention to stay, saying: “Next season is a new opportunity. I’ll be ready.”
For sure, it’s class from Edozie to admit he hadn’t been on par with Saints expectations over the past twelve months. And he still backs himself to succeed. Because let’s be honest, football doesn’t give you many chances at one club and Edozie has already gotten to work under multiple Southampton managers and formations without cutting it fine under anyone.
With Russell Martin in the 2023/24 Championship, Edozie felt close to the finished attacking prospect Southampton viewed in him while snapping him up from Manchester City for £10m. But a mid-season ankle injury put paid to those hopes.

Is Edozie ready to step up in 2026, when Southampton are going through an uncertain period and Edozie himself has entered the final year of his St. Mary’s contract? The answer seems to be Yes.
Sam Edozie opened up on his limited 2025/26 minutes
It’s no secret that Sam Edozie was sidelined from Championship action for the most part of 2025/26. That resulted in him going goalless for the season and notching up 3 assists with one notably coming against West Brom in a late 1-1 draw.
But that wasn’t down to Edozie’s quality alone. As Edozie added: “From the start I’ve been fit, ready to play and hungry to give my all out on the pitch, but for reasons out of my control, that hasn’t happened.”
Going by Edozie’s words, it’s possible both Will Still and Tonda Eckert were hesitant to experiment with him on the left wing while Leo Scienza was producing goals and chances every matchday.
Come August, there might be no Leo Scienza or Tonda Eckert around, Will Still is already gone, so it’s a big opportunity indeed for Edozie if he can impress the new coach and bring the goals for Southampton. Will Edozie succeed in 2026/27 at St. Mary’s, that remains to be seen.
