Southampton’s on-loan keeper Daniel Peretz will soon return to Bayern Munich after he feels utterly let down by the club’s involvement in the Spygate scandal.
After the EFL rejected Southampton’s appeal to be reinstated in the playoff final, the independent commission has put the Spygate case to bed. Now, the FA has begun its own investigation, looking to impose sanctions and bring charges against the primary offenders.
With this announcement, the club futures of Tonda Eckert, Johannes Spors, and other central figures have been endangered. But what affects supporters most in this situation is that their top players have begun handing in departure requests, feeling betrayed by the club.
The first name likely to leave is on‑loan keeper Daniel Peretz. Although the 25‑year‑old had one of his best career spells at St. Mary’s, the Spygate verdict has come as a bitter blow from which only a departure could help him recover.
SaintsExtra reported German outlet BILD’s update on Peretz’s situation, stating: “After Southampton’s expulsion from the play-off final, Daniel Peretz will return to Bayern Munich — it is a ‘bitter blow’ for the goalkeeper, who had been happy at the club.”
Peretz’s departure could be the first repercussion of Spygate
Southampton’s dramatic turnaround in the mid‑2025/26 campaign saw many star players step up. But arguably, no individual made more of a difference than Daniel Peretz after his winter arrival.
His addition was so clinical that it relieved the fan concerns left over from the Bazunu era. Peretz’s numbers were so brilliant that the Saints barely tasted defeat with him in goal.
Having single‑handedly changed several outcomes in Southampton’s favour, such as the 2‑1 away win over Coventry, Peretz conceded only 18 goals in 20 Championship appearances for the club.
Barring his league debut against Hull and the FA Cup semi‑final against Manchester City, Southampton were nearly invincible with Peretz in goal. Fast forward to now, and his time at St. Mary’s looks set to end on the bitterest of notes, with the keeper feeling let down by the club.

It’s true that promotion to the Premier League was important for Peretz to commit to a permanent move. However, there stood realistic chances that he might have stayed to help the club next season if they had lost on the pitch rather than through an EFL expulsion in the Spygate betrayal.
Given the sequence of events, Peretz’s exit may be the first of many from Southampton this summer. The keeper is destined for a big move after his impressive spell, but the Saints fans will be the ones most affected watching him shine away from St. Mary’s.
What are Southampton’s keeping options after Peretz’s exit?
There’s no convincing needed that the last few days have changed Southampton’s trajectory for years to come. Initially touted to be marching toward a Premier League return, the Saints now face uncertain times.
Much like the club’s overall situation, the goalkeeping department has taken a massive blow with Peretz’s departure. With the top‑pedigree keeper returning to Bayern Munich, Southampton are left with Gavin Bazunu and soon‑to‑return loanee Aaron Ramsdale.
Bazunu’s 2025/26 campaign is hidden from no one. After a mediocre record of leaking 28 goals in 19 league games for Southampton, he followed it with an injury‑plagued loan spell at Stoke City.
Ramsdale, on the other hand, has shown reliability in goal. But it remains uncertain whether he will stay to help Southampton. He left on loan specifically to seek top‑flight opportunities last summer, and it’s unlikely he’ll commit to a promotion push with a club now engulfed in the Spygate scandal.
If this unreliable situation with Bazunu and an unfavourable case to convince Ramsdale to stay wasn’t troubling enough, signing any new top keeper won’t be easy for Southampton either.
All in all, the goalkeeping department that once seemed secure with Peretz has turned into the biggest area of concern following the Spygate incident. The Saints have plenty of questions to answer regarding the keeping aspect if they aim to push for promotion next season.
