Tonda Eckert’s continuance in Southampton’s managerial role has proved key in loanee keeper Daniel Peretz committing to a permanent St. Mary’s stay.
Recently, the impending Daniel Peretz deal has been the biggest talking point for supporters in and around St. Mary’s. Based on what fans witnessed during his loan spell, the move has been hailed as a massive leap in Southampton’s promotion mission for next season.
The latest update confirms that Southampton have finalised Peretz’s permanent transfer from Bayern Munich. The Saints concluded the entire agreement within 24 hours of initial reports hinting at their interest.
Florian Plettenberg confirmed the transfer, stating: “Daniel Peretz to Southampton – DONE DEAL. Full agreements reached on a permanent transfer, including with FC Bayern. Transfer fee around €7.5-8m.”
The report further read: “Only small details remain to be clarified. Announcement soon. One of the key reasons behind the move is Peretz’s excellent relationship with head coach Tonda Eckert.”
Even an eight‑figure sum would feel modest compared to what Peretz’s move offers Southampton. While the €8m fee remains a key detail, what is even more striking is how influential Tonda Eckert’s presence has been in making this deal happen.
Peretz’s permanent move is credited to his relation with Eckert
Ever since boss Tonda Eckert arrived as interim manager, he has been highly regarded by the Saints’ players. Apart from being praised for his attention to detail in the game, several dressing room leaders like Taylor Harwood‑Bellis have admitted that Eckert possessed the character to become a success at Southampton from the very beginning.
Notably, just a couple of days ago, loanee forward Cyle Larin attributed his successful Saints spell to Eckert. If that wasn’t enough to demonstrate how the manager has won over the dressing room, Peretz’s signing confirms it once again.

As the transfer report confirms, a key reason Peretz agreed to join Southampton was because of Eckert. Having hardly enjoyed such backing and support from any former manager in recent years, the keeper was reluctant to work under anyone else, despite several options being available.
In fact, this clarifies why Peretz was indecisive about his future just a short time ago. With Southampton’s decision on Eckert’s continuity still pending amid the Spygate incident, the keeper was hesitant to commit to a permanent move.
But once everything fell into place, and owner Dragan Solak backed Eckert to remain the manager, Peretz’s signing announcement arrived within a couple of days of the update on Tonda’s future.
Saints might’ve curtailed points deduction with Peretz’s move
The Spygate incident and the EFL’s verdict brought multiple concerns for Southampton. Apart from being expelled from the playoff final and denied a promotion chance, the Saints were handed a four‑point deduction for the 2026/27 Championship season.
While the effect of the punishment will be visible on their points tally until they cross that four‑point mark, the recent signing of Daniel Peretz might go a long way in curtailing the deduction.
This is because of the terrific quality Peretz brings with his permanent move. Apart from having the best numbers of any Championship keeper in the second half of the season, he literally won several points for Southampton with his performances in goal.
Take, for instance, Southampton’s crucial away trip to West Brom or the following game against Coventry in March 2026. Against the Hawthorns, the Saints keeper turned a lost battle into a draw.
At the Coventry Stadium, Peretz pulled off miraculous saves to secure an important win for Southampton’s playoff hopes against the league leaders. That’s not even counting the routine impressive performances he has delivered ever since joining the club in January.
Having conceded three or more goals only once in his 26 appearances for Southampton, Peretz has shown tremendous consistency in delivering top‑notch performances. Should he continue in this rich vein of form next season, the Saints could mount a serious automatic promotion charge despite starting with a four‑point deduction.
