Caspar Jander’s ex-club Nürnberg are considering taking legal action against Southampton after the club’s expulsion from the playoff final deprived the German club of a €1m bonus tied to the Saints’ promotion.
72 hours have now passed since Southampton’s expulsion from the playoff final, but the Spygate reports have barely ceased. Each hour adds more to the catalogue of unjust practices that Tonda Eckert and his staff used to gain an advantage for the Saints.
Now, Eckert is unlikely to see the ongoing investigation conclude without a lengthy ban. Meanwhile, punishments continue to mount for Southampton, as several clubs plan moves to claim compensation for being affected by the club’s spying.
Recently, German club Nürnberg have entered the frame, seeking compensation for a €1m bonus tied to Southampton’s promotion. The clause was included in Caspar Jander’s sale to the Saints, and Nürnberg feel they have been undone by Southampton’s play‑off expulsion.
SaintsExtra quoted German outlet BILD’s report on the matter, saying: “Caspar Jander’s former club FC Nürnberg are planning to take Southampton to court over a €1m bonus that would have been paid to the German side upon Premier League promotion.”
Nürnberg plan to take Southampton to court for €1m bonus
When Southampton completed Jander’s signing in August 2025, they had to beat several suitors to secure his services. Given the overwhelming interest in Jander, his former club Nürnberg included several add‑ons in the deal that could take his €12m move up to a €15m valuation.
One of the most significant clauses in the contract pertained to Southampton’s promotion. It ensured that Nürnberg would receive a €1m bonus if Southampton returned to the Premier League before Jander’s contract expired in 2029.

The reason Nürnberg are seeking legal measures now is because of Jander’s uncertain future at Southampton. With multiple Saints players tipped to leave this summer, Nürnberg feel they may have lost out on a potential €1m promotion bonus that felt attainable until just days ago.
If Jander ends up changing clubs this summer amid Bundesliga interest in him, Nürnberg will no longer be eligible for the bonus. Although they would still receive a sell‑on fee, the German club may not let the matter cool down easily.
Saints can lose more on Jander’s exit than the Nürnberg case
What remains worth considering is that Nürnberg may not have a strong case against Southampton at this point. While the spying scandal led to the Saints’ expulsion from the playoff final, it was by no means certain they would have beaten Hull at Wembley to win promotion.
The primary reason for Nürnberg’s concern is Jander’s possible exit this summer. But until that move materialises, the German club are unlikely to proceed with serious legal action against Southampton on the matter.
This means Southampton have some time to resolve the dispute before it turns serious. What ought to bother the Saints more immediately is the greater loss that could come from Jander’s possible exit itself.
According to BILD, the German midfielder is seriously considering an exit after being deprived of a promotion opportunity. While Jander’s winter transfer rumours were contained by Eckert, the matter may now feel out of hand after the midfielder has been let down by the manager himself.
It’s worth noting that a successful debut season had seen Jander’s market value rise significantly. But the sequence of events in Spygate could deprive Southampton of collecting that hefty profit, and they may be forced to let him go for a cut‑price fee.
If that happens, the Saints are in for an unimaginable loss on both sporting and financial fronts. Even keeping monetary matters aside, the departure of a quality midfielder like Jander would significantly deplete their midfield quality.
Another star midfielder, Shea Charles, has already been a favourite to depart St. Mary’s in the upcoming summer transfer window. If Jander leaves as well, the Saints may need to rebuild their midfield from scratch.
