Southampton receive a massive boost as Derby County forward Rhian Brewster has been ruled out for the season and will miss the Rams’ crucial playoff decider against the Saints.
Southampton face a tricky run of games as they return to action after the March international break. Their first three fixtures, the FA Cup tie against Arsenal and consecutive playoff deciders against Wrexham and Derby, are arguably the most challenging of the run‑in.
Much has been said about the importance of the Cup knockout and the must‑win game against Wrexham. But Championship matchday 40 results suggest the Saints should hold the Derby clash in no less regard.
Notably, Derby County were sensational against Coventry City. Though the Rams lost 2-3, they remain in the playoff race, just three points behind Southampton.
Derby County’s recent form and willingness to go all‑in for a playoff spot would pose a significant challenge for Southampton. To the Saints’ relief, however, they are in for a major boost when they line up against Derby next week.
That’s because Derby County star Rhian Brewster is set to miss the Southampton game after being ruled out for the remainder of the season. Derby Telegraph writer Leigh Curtis confirmed the news: “Rhian Brewster has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury sustained in the win over Birmingham. Has had an op on his cartilage.”
Rhian Brewster picked up knee injury Vs Birmingham
Brewster’s 2025/26 campaign has been much like his previous spells in terms of frequent injury issues. But despite those absences, the 26‑year‑old has been a through‑and‑through hit for the Rams.
Since joining Derby County last summer, Rhian Brewster has amassed 7 goals and 2 assists in this Championship campaign. The fact that he has delivered those numbers in under 1,500 minutes speaks volumes about his impact on Derby’s playoff charge.
To Southampton’s relief, they won’t have to face Brewster again after their 1‑1 draw earlier this season. The injury he picked up against Birmingham before the international break has ruled him out of the rematch.
It’s worth noting that Brewster had scored the only goal of the clash against Birmingham on the stroke of half‑time. He played another 20 minutes before Derby boss John Eustace substituted him around his usual hour mark.

Though Brewster sustained a knock during the game, it was initially assumed to be a minor concern. Only the post‑match scan revealed that he had damaged the cartilage in his knee.
According to the injury report, Rhian Brewster has undergone an operation on his knee. With recovery from such a procedure often taking months, he is officially ruled out for the Southampton game.
Southampton will have a double boost Vs Derby County
While Brewster’s knee operation rules him out of the Southampton game, he won’t be the only in‑form Rams forward missing the crucial clash. The other is Saints loanee Ben Brereton Díaz.
With EFL loan clauses prohibiting loanees from playing against their parent club, Díaz will be nothing more than a spectator for the game.
If Brewster’s absence was a relief, Díaz’s absence tilts the tie even further in Southampton’s favour. The latter has been in even better form than Brewster, scoring six goals in the second half of the campaign alone.
Brereton Díaz’s performances have been so convincing that Derby fans are demanding his permanent signing. If that doesn’t convey his form, his recent masterclass against Coventry should.
Though the Rams lost 2-3 to the league leaders, Díaz arguably had his best performance this season. The Saints loanee scored a brace and had levelled the score in the 77th minute before Rugani scored a late winner to cancel out his effort.
Following Derby’s defeat to Coventry, their playoff chances hang by a thread. The absence of Brewster and Díaz gives in-form Southampton the perfect opportunity to extinguish even those faint hopes when they face the Rams.
The tie against Coventry already showed how John Eustace was left with no option but to hand Jaydon Banel his first Derby start in place of Brewster. With Díaz also missing, the Rams’ attacking depth will be reduced to bare bones.
Overall, Southampton will enter the Derby matchday with a distinct upper edge. It remains to be seen whether Tonda Eckert’s side can make the most of it.
