Southampton are actively pursuing 24-year-old Espanyol right winger Jofre Carreras.
It’s worth noting that Southampton have actively looked to expand their market opportunities beyond the English division. Having already made some impressive deals from the German division following Johannes Spors’ arrival in 2025, the Saints are considering the Spanish division now.
Notably, Cyle Larin’s successful spell this year stood an important move in this regard. After finalising a permanent move for him recently, the Saints have turned to La Liga again to reinforce their attack force.
The player in question this time is Espanyol winger Jofre Carreras. The Saints are considering a move for the player after he impressed the club in a preaseason friendly last summer.
SaintsExtra referenced journalist Ángel García’s transfer report, stating: “Southampton are looking to finalise the signing of Espanyol right winger Jofre Carreras(24).”
Southampton interested in Espanyol winger Jofre Carreras
Jofre Carreras has been a homegrown star for Espanyol. Having risen through the academy ranks to break into the first team, the player has already enjoyed considerable success in his professional career despite being just 24.
Notably, Carreras had an impressive season as Espanyol returned to La Liga after the 2023/24 campaign in the second division. With three goals and four assists, the winger was a regular in their promotion‑winning side.
The following season, Carreras replicated his second‑division numbers with Espanyol in La Liga. With seven goal contributions, the winger rarely missed a game in a consistent campaign for the Spanish side.
The 2025/26 season has indeed been a cold one for Carreras in nearly every metric. However, what has sparked Southampton’s interest is his unquestionable ability to dribble his way to the opposition box and create chances for other attackers.

Notably, Southampton experienced Carreras’s heroics first‑hand during the preseason ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. Starting for Espanyol against a Will Still‑led Saints side, the winger troubled the Saints backline on several occasions and was key in influencing Espanyol’s 2-1 win.
In one noteworthy play, he channelled his instinct to go on a superb solo run through the Saints’ defence. Although he couldn’t convert that effort into a goal, Carreras demonstrated his ability to find his way through compact defences with relative ease.
Is Jofre Carreras an upgrade over existing option Tom Fellows?
There is no denying that Carreras’s playmaking ability, combined with his La Liga pedigree, makes him an interesting profile. However, the question circulating at St. Mary’s is whether he would be an upgrade over the existing right‑wing option, Tom Fellows.
Fellows has posted better seasonal figures than Carreras in recent years. While it could be noted that Fellows has played in the Championship while Carreras brings La Liga top‑flight pedigree, their profiles feel similar as creative playmakers.
What needs to be noted in this comparison is that Carreras’s natural playing style differs from Fellows’s. While the latter is a traditional touchline winger who trusts his ability to go down the flank and deliver crosses, Carreras is a more versatile option.
Having donned multiple attacking roles across the front line, his game revolves around finding space through the opposition’s backline, carrying the ball forward, and delivering it to fellow attackers. That is what makes Carreras an exciting pick, even if his goalscoring ability remains a question mark.
Recently, Southampton owner Dragan Solak detailed how the club’s plan is to bring in a number ten to ease Fin Azaz’s workload. Perhaps they are looking at Carreras’s profile as a player who can slot into that creative role, given his ability as a direct carrier of the ball in attacking positions.
For now, the Jofre Carreras to Southampton rumour is picking up pace at St. Mary’s. The coming days will be crucial in determining how the Saints carry forward their interest in the La Liga winger.
