Sky Bet’s latest announcement hints at Southampton’s near-confirmed participation in the playoff final against Hull City.
For around two weeks, the Spygate incident involving Southampton has been the biggest talking point in English football. And rightly so, given the verdict on the incident directly influences who becomes the third promoted side to the top flight next season.
Needless to say, there is a lot for Southampton to look out for when the EFL delivers its verdict on 19th May. The Saints could face a punishment ranging from a fine to expulsion from the playoff final if found guilty.
In principle, Southampton would be content to have the issue resolved as long as it allows them to participate in the playoff final against Hull. Whether they escape severe punishment after Middlesbrough’s evidence remains to be seen, but Sky Bet’s latest announcement must have relieved some pressure on the Saints.
Sky Bet announcement confirms Southampton’s Wembley trip
There’s little doubt that the playoff final is the biggest event in the second‑division calendar. Unsurprisingly, Sky Bet being the title sponsor of the Championship, has exclusive events planned to build matchday hype for the Wembley clash.
As part of this yearly routine, Sky Bet have been running a “Time is Now” video campaign featuring fans from both sides involved in the promotion‑deciding finale. Days ago, they hinted at continuing the initiative by inviting Hull City fans to record their playoff final message to their players.
Fortunately, Saints supporters have been welcomed as the second finalists after their side defeated Middlesbrough at St. Mary’s in the second semi‑final last week.

Sky Bet’s official announcement read: “We are giving SaintsFC fans the chance to appear on the big screen at Wembley by recording a Play-Off Final rallying cry to the players. Head to Sharkeys Sports Bar tomorrow (Sunday) from 1-5pm to record your message”
As part of the campaign, Southampton fans could head to Sharkeys Sports Bar to record one final message to the Saints ahead of the Wembley playoff final. If lucky, their message could be selected to be played on screen during the season finale.
While Sky Bet’s announcement welcoming Southampton fans remains an indirect hint, it seems more than likely that the Saints will be the side facing Hull for a shot at promotion.
How will the Spygate controversy end for Southampton?
The most concrete evidence presented by Middlesbrough so far is Will Salt’s picture from behind the tree. While Sky Bet’s announcement may suggest Southampton will participate in the final, the club are unlikely to escape the incident without punishment.
What counts against Southampton is that they allegedly spied on their playoff rivals within the critical 72‑hour window set after Leeds’ 2019 Spygate incident. Factor in the united opinions calling for action, and the EFL’s upcoming decision will likely go against the Saints.
The fact that the chances of Southampton being expelled from the playoff final have drastically reduced will relieve fans. Such a punishment always seemed too harsh given the financial incentives that come with promotion, and Sky Bet’s announcement has further minimised that outcome.
As a result, a realistic punishment for Southampton’s actions could range from a fine of a couple of million pounds to a possible points deduction. Notably, that point deduction could be a suspended deduction, applying only if Southampton remain in the Championship next season.
If Southampton emerge as the better side against Hull in the Wembley final, they could secure promotion to the Premier League while paying only a financial penalty.
That remains the best possible outcome from the Spygate incident. With the Championship playoff final scheduled for next week and the EFL’s decision expected in a couple of days, it remains to be seen how the controversy will end for Southampton.
