Southampton fans laugh at the recent €3m Welington transfer rumour linking him with a summer exit from St. Mary’s just one year after arriving.
Southampton are frequently linked with Premier League transfer rumours for various star players like Leo Scienza, Finn Azaz and Shea Charles. They are amongst the Saints crucial first team assets so the club needs to be mindful about accepting the right offers only. Else, keeping those talents for future Premier League preparations isn’t a bad idea.
Besides that, Southampton have a big task to resolve the future of many current non-starters. A handful of players such as Aaron Ramsdale, Damion Downs and others are set to arrive after their respective loan deals.
Welington’s Southampton career so far
Saints full-back Welington is another name who falls in the non-starter category at St. Mary’s. Although not so much. Welington joined Southampton in January 2025 under the management of former boss Ivan Juric.
From day one, it’s evident that the Brazilian is a skilful defender down the left hand side with a clever knack for marking wingers. Welington just gave his first Southampton assist in the 5-1 Wrexham thrashing but many of his dangerous crosses inside the box have gone begging before.

If not for his regular injuries, Welington is on the same level at Ryan Manning. Similar to Ross Stewart and Cyle Larin alternating at the striker position, the Saints have the luxury of picking from two elite left-backs Welington and Manning considering both remain fit.
Welington to leave Southampton for €3m rumour
Hence, Southampton should only entertain a Welington exit if an irresistible eight-figure transfer offer comes. Not like the recent transfer rumour. According to Brazilian outlet Radio Tupi, Southampton are speculated to sell Welington for €3m.
Definitely, it’s a laughable offer. Southampton did sign Welington on a free transfer but that doesn’t mean they will look to cash in for a small €3m profit. Welington is just 25 years old and can massively go up in transfer value with a few strong seasons at Southampton.
Southampton fans laugh at €3m Welington transfer rumour
One Southampton fan suggested that the Welington transfer rumour might be down to his agent’s demands. He said: “He’s a terrific player, he’s worth at least £20 million and he’s an important member of our squad. I’ll be extremely irked if he goes so easily although no doubt it’s agent’s talk.”
These days, it’s quite common for agents to push their players to quickly switch clubs or ask for frequent wage raises so it’s a valid possibility. Another Saints supporter urged the squad to focus on the current promotion push.

He added: “Unnecessary background noise & click bait. Two weeks remaining to keep focused on the real job” Spot on. Southampton comes first, after that comes the players’ long-term futures those who wish to leave.
Another Southampton fan bluntly put: “Not for sale”
Aside from Welington, Southampton only have on-loan fullback Charlie Taylor to deputise for Ryan Manning. Manning is 29 while Charlie Taylor is 32, so clearly none of them is the present and future of Southampton’s backline, unlike Welington.
Plus, the €3m transfer fee rumoured is quite low even if Southampton were open to a sale. A fourth Saints fan pointed it out, saying: “3?! He’s worth 10 times that!”
Saints have sold promising fullbacks like Luke Shaw and Tino Livramento for fees in excess of £30m-40m. Welington isn’t just there with Shaw and Livramento in terms of talent.
However, he might be one of the exciting Premier League fullbacks in the coming years so it’ll be foolish to let him go for cheap without realising his true potential.
