Southampton captain Jack Stephens had to be removed from the club training session after a concussion scare, and the defender is a doubt for the FA Cup game against Arsenal.
Southampton are set for a thrilling conclusion to the season as they return to action with an FA Cup tie against Arsenal. Being the only Championship side left in the competition, they face the challenge of balancing a Cup run with their playoff charge.
To Southampton’s advantage, Arsenal’s mounting injury list strengthens their hand ahead of the Cup tie. With Madueke, Eze, Merino, and now Hincapie all sidelined, the Saints enter the matchday with a clear edge.
However, it would be wrong to suggest Southampton have been untouched by injuries. While no fitness issues have been confirmed, the club face an injury scare over captain Jack Stephens ahead of the crucial Cup tie against Arsenal.
Daily Echo reporter George Rees-Julian updated on Stephens’ condition, saying: “Jack Stephens is withdrawn from training after a collision with Nathan Wood. Hopefully, that is only precautionary, far from ideal timing for the skipper.”
Jack Stephens in doubt for FA Cup tie
As the fitness report reads, Jack Stephens’ collision with teammate Nathan Wood led Southampton to pull the skipper out of the team training. Though the step is being considered as a precautionary measure, nothing will be confirmed until Tonda Eckert provides an official update.
There are limited days until Southampton hosts Arsenal in the FA Cup. While Stephens’ availability is naturally in doubt, the strict provisions regarding concussion injuries further jeopardise his chances of featuring.

The biggest concern is that Stephens may have suffered a concussion in the collision with Wood. If confirmed, he would need to clear all stages of the return‑to‑play protocol before being allowed on the pitch again.
That could rule Stephens out of more than just the FA Cup tie. With concussion injuries reported to take as long as two weeks or more to recover, the defender’s availability for the playoff decider against Wrexham next week would also be in serious doubt.
Should that happen, Southampton are in for a major loss. While Jack Stephens stood as a rotation player in the first half of the season, the defender’s importance has increased rapidly under boss Tonda Eckert.
If the club Captain gets ruled out of the Arsenal matchday or the subsequent Championship games, it would be a massive blow to Southampton and their dressing room.
Who can replace Stephens in FA Cup game against Arsenal?
No doubt Jack Stephens’ injury scare comes at a detrimental stage for Southampton. However, the situation is unlikely to affect the Saints at least for the Cup tie against Arsenal.
Notably, Stephens didn’t feature in any Cup games this season. With Tonda relying on rotation players for these competitions, the manager would likely have opted against using him in the FA Cup tie regardless.
As for who replaces Stephens, Southampton have two options: Nathan Wood and Joshua Quarshie. While both will welcome the FA Cup responsibility, Tonda is likely to give the nod to Wood.
Having played significantly more minutes than Quarshie, Wood is the favourite to retain his FA Cup starting spot.
Again, there’s no doubt that Nathan Wood has been error‑prone himself. His inconsistent performances were the reason he got dropped from the starting XI mid-season to make way for Jack Stephens.
However, there’s no denying the fact that his experience overpowers Quarshie’s case. Despite Quarshie’s solid recent display for Germany U21, he still looks a bit raw for a showdown against a mighty Premier League opponent.
All signs point to Nathan Wood replacing Jack Stephens if the captain is ruled out. But the ideal scenario would still be for fans to see Taylor Harwood‑Bellis and Stephens lining up together in the usual, trusted pairing.
