Southampton announce the much-awaited renewal of fan-favourite full-back, James Bree.
Southampton’s recently announced list of released players confirmed the departure of Ross Stewart. While the forward’s unresolved contract situation is likely to disappoint a fair section of the club faithful, the Saints have followed it with a massive announcement.
The update is the contract renewal of Southampton fan‑favourite James Bree. Although the player had been rumoured for an extension, the full‑back has now put pen to paper on a new Saints deal until 2029.
Daily Echo reporter Alfie House confirmed: “Saints defender James Bree, 28, has signed a new three-year contract to remain with the club until 2029! Great news.”
James Bree signs much deserved renewal till 2029
Although James Bree joined Southampton in January 2023 itself, the right‑back’s spell has not been a smooth sail until recently. In fact, Bree had to settle for a rotational role for most of his Southampton tenure before winning the support of the club and fans.
Bree was a backup to first‑choice full‑back Kyle Walker‑Peters until last summer. With the latter bidding farewell to Southampton after a memorable five‑year spell, Bree had very big boots to fill in Walker‑Peters’ absence.
However, the way Bree has pulled off a redemption 2025/26 Championship campaign after a couple of decent seasons deserves praise. Despite not being the first choice and being loaned out to Charlton, he returned better to kickstart his best Southampton spell ever.

In January 2026, boss Tonda Eckert’s decision to switch to a back four was heavily influenced by Bree’s return from loan. While Eckert took a mid‑season gamble in a crucial, decisive phase, Bree repaid the faith by turning Southampton’s season around.
Ever since, Bree has been an undisputed starter for Southampton in the right‑back role. Apart from being solid at the back, his 4 goal contributions and set‑piece delivery have been extremely crucial to the Saints’ journey to the playoffs.
So far, Bree’s Southampton spell has not always been the best. However, his new contract renewal is completely earned for the way he stepped up when the Saints needed him most in a decisive promotion push.
Southampton check off list of must-retain players with Bree’s deal
Following the permanent signings of Daniel Peretz, Cyle Larin, and George Long, Bree’s renewal comes as the fourth major announcement for Southampton this summer. The move provides stability to their right‑back department for years to come and also completes a key objective for the Saints.
Notably, a primary task for Southampton was to retain their key players after a successful 2025/26 campaign. With Bree’s renewal, the club can now check that objective off their to‑do list, with nearly all must‑do retentions secured.
Southampton have laid the groundwork for a strong promotion push by backing Tonda Eckert and providing him with his core players for next season. However, the task is far from done, as the club need several additions to bolster their squad as promotion favourites.
First and foremost, the free exit of Ross Stewart has opened up a significant gap up front. While an ideal scenario would have seen Southampton renew his contract before the deadline expired, the Saints must now make amends by bringing in a quality forward to rotate with Larin.
Following that, the club could look to provide a reliable backup for James Bree. Although the right‑back is expected to hit the ground running once again next season, an injury‑free deputy is essential for unforeseen circumstances.
Overall, Bree’s renewal brings Southampton one step closer to assembling a promotion‑winning side once more. The fan favourite’s contract extension has the club faithful even more excited about what lies ahead in this summer window.
