It’s not wrong to admit that Shea Charles is linked with a summer transfer to almost half of the Premier League. Plenty of suitors including Manchester United, Everton, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest among others have registered an interest in taking him from Southampton ahead of the 2026/27 season.

As such, the Saints have every reason to anticipate a bidding war and hold out for a huge transfer fee. Various outlets have reported a £25m asking price for Shea Charles which is a good starting point for Southampton to try and potentially drive the price point above £30m.

Regardless of how the Shea Charles negotiations go, it’s certain Southampton won’t let the Northern Irish sensation leave for cheap. And that makes the recent Rangers transfer links sound more wishful than realistic.

Given Rangers finished 3rd place in the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership and missed out on another league title to Old Firm rivals Celtic it’s not surprising they will wish to bolster their squad with better names.

Shea Charles is a player for the now and future, making him a perfect profile for an ambitious club like Rangers. Moreover, the report stresses on Rangers boss Danny Rohl’s desire to work with Charles again after the duo led Sheffield Wednesday to an entertaining mid-table finish in the 2024/25 Championship campaign.

There is also the element of Southampton finding it tough to hold onto regular starters like Charles after the ‘Spygate’ scandal. All in all, this Shea Charles to Rangers transfer looks quite possible on the surface until one looks at the obvious stumbling block.

Coming to the deal breaker, it’s Rangers transfer budget. The Gers play European football almost every year but still struggle to cough up the cash needed for big money transfers. At second, is Youssef Chermiti’s £8m addition from Everton in 2025. Moreover, there were widespread reports last year that Rangers summer transfer budget for 2025/26 season was in the region of £20-25m. That translates to just about Shea Charles current market valuation without accounting for an increase in asking price due to other interested clubs.

A loan deal thus remains the only way out. But think for a moment, why would Southampton sanction a Shea Charles loan? The Saints can either cash in on him and reinvest that money to sign 2-3 top talents in different positions, or better keep Charles and boost chances of an automatic Premier League promotion next season.

Despite the spying allegations, Shea Charles will know better that the current Southampton squad is capable of sealing automatic Premier League promotion next time around. That is more incentive for Charles also, to stay put at St. Mary’s than following Rohl to Ibrox.

The bottom line is it’s next to impossible for Rangers to meet Southampton’s £25m demand for Shea Charles. A Premier League switch or a Saints stay looks more realistic. Let’s see where Charles will eventually end up when the new season kicks off.
