Manchester United are assessing whether to pursue Shea Charles’ move while linked to hefty moves for more experienced midfield profiles like Éderson and Sandro Tonali.
Southampton currently find themselves in a unique situation of their own. While there have been some positives in the aftermath of the Spygate incident as emotions have cooled, they still have plenty to think about and plan for this coming summer.
One of the primary discussion points is the departure of near‑guaranteed exit‑bound players. Although the Saints may end up retaining a chunk of their core squad if Tonda Eckert stays, they are highly unlikely to control the departures of players like Shea Charles.
The past few days have already seen clubs using the Spygate fallout as an opportunity to push for a move for Charles. In this regard, Southampton have been hit with another update that could affect the midfielder’s future.
Saints Extra referenced a Daily Mail report: “Manchester United are assessing a move for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles (22), who is valued at £25m.”
Man United assess Shea Charles transfer call amidst Éderson talks
It’s worth noting that Man United have had Shea Charles on their transfer radar for quite some time now. However, the Red Devils’ interest may have just taken a sharper turn as they approach the summer transfer window.
That’s because, unfortunately for Charles, he isn’t the only midfielder United are planning to move for this summer. In fact, while the club are yet to make an official move for Charles, they have advanced significantly in talks for a similar profile in Atalanta midfielder Éderson.
Recently, Fabrizio Romano updated on United’s progress in the Éderson deal, stating: “Éderson has agreed personal terms with Manchester United and paused all talks with other clubs since last week. Atalanta and Man United have been in talks over €45m package deal for weeks.”

However, Shea Charles isn’t competing only with Éderson for a Man United move. According to Calcio Mercato, Manchester United are also reportedly willing to make a blockbuster move for Newcastle superstar Sandro Tonali for the central midfield role.
While United are lining up multiple moves to replace the departing Casemiro, they won’t want to overspend in the central midfield department either. This places uncertainty over their pursuit of Shea Charles, even though the midfielder was touted as one of the most exciting low‑budget options on United’s shortlist just months ago.
Where could Shea Charles end up this summer?
There’s no denying that Shea Charles has been one of Southampton’s best players in the 2025/26 campaign. His surge in elite decision‑making and ability to run the entire midfield suggests he may have already outgrown the Championship level.
Unsurprisingly, that marks Charles as ready for a top‑flight switch. While this consensus has remained for a long time, what has really changed is that Charles may now need a stepping‑stone club before a Big Six move.
Notably, Man United’s surging interest in more experienced profiles like Éderson and Sandro Tonali suggests the same. Even if the Red Devils end up signing Charles, he is more than likely to end up as a rotation midfielder in a lineup stacked with stars like Bruno Fernandes, Éderson, and potentially Tonali as well.
While a Big Six move is always lucrative for a player of Charles’s talent, he might realistically be better off looking for a bottom or mid‑table Premier League side initially. Here, the rising interest of Leeds United could help the Saints midfielder’s case.
In a club like Leeds, Charles could consistently rack up game time while proving his quality directly to elite Big Six clubs. That could soon open a realistic door for the midfielder to secure a headline‑worthy move sooner rather than later.
For now, Leeds remain one of the frontrunners in the Shea Charles transfer saga, especially after Man United’s shift towards more expensive profiles. Although the Lilywhites are yet to make an official offer to Southampton for Charles, the midfielder may likely end up at a mid‑table, ambitious Premier League side this summer.
