Southampton have announced the signing of 16-year-old full-back starlet Harris Afzal.
Southampton’s exceptional performances on the pitch have given them the freedom to pounce on any brilliant market opportunity that arises. Already on an 18‑game unbeaten streak and pushing for an automatic promotion spot, the Saints have kick-started their summer transfer business early.
Days ago, the club announced the signing of U17 youth international Issa Tounkara. The Saints have now doubled down on their youth recruitment strategy by recently adding another talent to their Staplewood ranks.
The player in question is 16-year-old prodigy Harris Afzal. Having made a name for himself with his talent and skill despite his age, Southampton have secured him on a contract to join the Saints academy.
The club announced Afzal’s signing, quoting: “We’re delighted to confirm the signing of Harris Afzal, who will join the club’s Academy from @queensparkfc in the summer.”
Southampton beat Crystal Palace for Harris Afzal’s signing
Afzal had already become one of the most sought-after talents from the Scottish market at just 16 years old. Needless to say, his signing didn’t come easy for the Saints, who had to fight off Premier League interest from Crystal Palace.
Not long ago, reports surfaced indicating Palace’s surging interest in acquiring Afzal. Although Southampton had a deal agreed with Queen’s Park, Crystal Palace’s timely interest increased fears of the Saints succumbing to a transfer defeat for the prodigy left-back.
A Premier League club and the prospect of rapidly rising through the ranks there is always a lure for a talented prodigy like Afzal. With Palace showing interest and having agreed a deal of their own, it’s commendable how Southampton held their ground and used their first‑mover advantage to secure the signing.

Southampton have already defeated two Premier League clubs in 2026 as a Championship side. While knocking out Fulham and Arsenal paved their way to the FA Cup semi‑finals, securing Afzal’s signing despite Palace’s interest could prove just as valuable in the long run.
Given the potential Afzal holds to have already made it into senior matchday squads at just 16, the full‑back could become another success story to emerge from Staplewood.
Afzal joins coveted full-back factory at Saints academy
Southampton’s Staplewood Academy has produced countless talents over the years. While Matt Le Tissier, Alan Shearer, and Adam Lallana are among the distinct superstars to have come through the club, Southampton have also developed a speciality in producing full‑backs.
Though the club’s management needs to be praised for swiftly finalising their agreed terms for Harris Afzal, the success stories of left‑backs who graduated from the academy must have been a major pull in luring him to the club.
Even setting aside Gareth Bale, who transformed from left‑back to winger, Southampton have produced several notable full‑backs, including Wayne Bridge and Luke Shaw, among others.
More recent examples like Yan Valery and Jayden Meghoma illustrate that Southampton still possess the secret sauce to turn promising young talents into quality full‑backs.
Southampton signed Valery at the age of 16, just like Afzal. Within years, the prodigy was fast‑tracked and integrated into the senior setup at 19 to make him ready for first‑team football. Having departed the Saints in 2022, Valery is currently on loan at Swiss club Young Boys.
Jayden Meghoma’s case also resembles that of Harris Afzal. Brought into the Saints’ academy at just 16 in 2022, he quickly rose through the ranks at the club.
After debuting him at 17, Southampton sold Meghoma to Premier League side Brentford for £10m. Currently, Meghoma is on loan at Rangers, where he has established himself as a starter for Danny Rohl’s side.
Overall, Southampton’s signing of Harris Afzal heralds him as the next name in the coveted list of full‑backs produced by Staplewood. He is set to join the academy initially, but it shouldn’t surprise fans if he makes his Premier League debut before completing his teenage years.
