Southampton loanee Aaron Ramsdale will return to St. Mary’s after Newcastle opts against signing him permanently in a £20m move.
Recently, Southampton fans received an update on loanee Will Smallbone’s latest injury during his Millwall spell. Having spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch for the Lions, the midfielder looks set to return to the Saints this summer.
It’s safe to conclude that Southampton’s plan to loan Smallbone to help him rediscover his form has failed spectacularly. However, he isn’t the only Saints loanee set to return to St. Mary’s at the end of the season.
Will Smallbone will be joined by former teammate Aaron Ramsdale in returning to Southampton at the end of this season. Though the goalkeeper’s loan to Newcastle was the highest‑profile of the Saints’ summer departures, Ramsdale will return to St. Mary’s.
According to The Northern Echo‘s latest report, Newcastle are heading for a major overhaul in their goalkeeping department this summer. Amid Nick Pope’s poor form, the Magpies plan to sign a new number one once Aaron Ramsdale’s loan spell ends.
Newcastle won’t proceed with Ramsdale’s £20m permanent signing
There’s no doubt that Southampton loanee Aaron Ramsdale has finally secured the starting role for Newcastle ahead of the primary choice, Nick Pope. But it’s been more due to the latter’s error‑prone displays than the Magpies being genuinely impressed with Ramsdale.
A look at Ramsdale’s season tally reads that he has conceded 37 goals in his 21 appearances for Newcastle. While these numbers aren’t convincing, Ramsdale’s mere 2 clean sheets hint at his subpar loan campaign.

It’s also worth noting how Ramsdale’s unconvincing form has been central to Newcastle’s dismal campaign. The keeper was in goal for all three of the Magpies’ cup exits, including an 8‑3 aggregate humiliation by FC Barcelona in the Champions League, plus FA Cup and EFL Cup eliminations at the hands of Manchester City.
Apart from being the antagonist in three of the four competitions Newcastle entered, the 8-3 defeat to Barcelona saw Newcastle register their worst European defeat ever.
Given those performances, Newcastle’s decision not to trigger the £20m permanent buy clause in Ramsdale’s loan contract is hardly surprising. Though he’s set to remain their starting keeper until the end of the season, the Southampton loanee will return to St. Mary’s this summer.
Ramsdale’s future has an uncertain summer ahead
Aaron Ramsdale’s return to Southampton will be a mixed bag for the club’s faithful. While the Saints will have a PL pedigree keeper back at their disposal, his presence sets up a difficult summer decision.
It’s worth noting that Ramsdale’s primary motivation for joining a top‑flight club last summer was to get back on England’s radar for the 2026 World Cup. Though he has been called up for the March international break, his previous decision may come back to haunt him.
That’s because Ramsdale’s departure left Southampton with Gavin Bazunu as their primary goalkeeper, and relying on Bazunu held the Saints back for much of this season.
Now that Southampton have an excellent keeper in Daniel Peretz, the club is unlikely to move back to Ramsdale, who left them ahead of the Championship season. If the Saints manage a promotion this term, they could convince Peretz to make his loan permanent.
If that happens, Ramsdale’s future will be left hanging in the balance. While two more years remain on his Saints contract, Ramsdale is unlikely to accept a backup role at St. Mary’s next season.
That sets up Southampton for another busy window in the Ramsdale saga. Though Newcastle have opted against his permanent move, the Saints will try to recoup their initial £18m by selling him to another Premier League club.
