Southampton loanee Aaron Ramsdale is set to return to St. Mary’s after being unable to impress Newcastle United to get a permanent move to the Magpies.
The Aaron Ramsdale saga has been an interesting one to follow at Southampton. That’s because the keeper’s elite Premier League pedigree as a former Arsenal number one has seen him linked with an exit in every possible transfer window since arriving at St. Mary’s.
In between, Ramsdale has already changed clubs in each of the last two summers. While a keeper of his quality and experience would be touted for a major role at quite some Top Flight sides, Ramsdale looks certain to be in for another change of scenery this time around.
This follows the recent update that Aaron Ramsdale will be returning to Southampton as his Newcastle loan ends. Having failed to convince the Magpies for the number one spot, the club are not considering a permanent move for the Saints loanee.
Lee Ryder provided an update on Ramsdale’s situation, stating: “Aaron Ramsdale set to return to Southampton after season long loan at NUFC. No deal agreed at present moment. Newcastle also looking at other goalkeepers.”
Ramsdale’s return confirms inevitable fear after mediocre loan
When Ramsdale opted for a loan move to Newcastle last summer, he had limited guarantees of regular playing time for the Magpies. And even when the opportunity arrived at his doorstep, he couldn’t grasp it with both hands.
When Nick Pope suffered a groin injury mid‑season, Ramsdale got the starting role towards the end of 2025. The Saints loanee performed decently enough to earn another opportunity during Pope’s poor run in March 2026.
But to Ramsdale’s misfortune, he missed this key opportunity to impress the Magpies and secure a permanent stay at St. James’ Park. Following a mediocre run that saw him concede seven goals in a Champions League knockout tie against Barcelona and two goals in each of his next three Premier League games, he was reduced to the bench once again.

Although Ramsdale remained a part of Newcastle’s roster until recently, the Magpies had made their decision on him long before. While he could have succeeded the 34‑year‑old Nick Pope, his unimpressive loan has caused the club to look at younger options in the transfer market.
As Lee Ryder confirmed, there is no deal in place to extend Ramsdale’s stay at Newcastle. With the keeper bound to return to St. Mary’s soon, the Magpies will turn to younger options to gradually replace Pope amid concerns over his form.
Saints running out of keeping options despite multiple keepers
Currently, Southampton’s goalkeeping department faces a unique situation. While the club have multiple keepers in Gavin Bazunu, Aaron Ramsdale, and promising youngsters like Ollie Wright, they are actually running short of reliable options to fall back on for next season.
Starting with Aaron Ramsdale, the ex-Arsenal keeper is unlikely to settle for a Championship role. While Southampton’s task would have been easier if his loan had led to a permanent move to Newcastle, the Saints will now need to resolve his future themselves this summer.
Although the future of Southampton’s goalkeeping department remains uncertain, Ramsdale is likely to enjoy another top‑flight campaign next season. With several European clubs interested in him, the keeper could be packing his bags sooner rather than later this summer.
If Southampton find themselves in an unfavourable position to convince Ramsdale for a Championship season, the situation with Bazunu poses another problem. He remains sidelined after getting injured during his Stoke loan, and there is no certainty on when he can return to action.
Amid this situation, young keeper Ollie Wright’s progress remains a rare positive for Southampton. Having impressed on loan at League Two side Accrington Stanley, the Saints have renewed his contract as an option for the future.
Ideally, the best outcome from this goalkeeping dilemma would be convincing Daniel Peretz to commit to a permanent move after his exceptional winter loan. If that is followed by a backup signing or Bazunu’s return to form, the Saints could be in good shape between the sticks.
