Southampton prodigy Jay Robinson expresses content while reflecting on the club’s ongoing Premier League promotion push.
The international break is over for Southampton, and only days remain until the final stretch of the season begins. While this phase demands players to shift focus to the promotion race, it offers fans one last chance to reflect on the campaign before it reaches its conclusion.
Southampton’s 2025/26 campaign is open to interpretation. Some fans might agree with Fin Azaz’s view that the season hasn’t fully convinced them. On the other hand, some will be content with the remarkable turnaround the club has achieved in recent months.
While the second viewpoint doesn’t argue against striving for a better finish, it’s about being content with Southampton’s success. This perspective was echoed by prodigy Jay Robinson when asked to reflect on the season.
As quoted by the Daily Echo, Robinson said: “I’m happy with where we are. I want to play as well as possible to help the team push towards the play-offs.”
Robinson added: “Then we will see what happens at the end of the season. We are playing for something now, which is always good.”
Jay Robinson makes valid playoffs point
Notably, Robinson scored the first goal of boss Tonda Eckert’s era in the 2-1 win over QPR. Given this mention, his satisfaction with Southampton’s current position carries special significance.
There’s no doubt that Southampton are a massive club compared to Championship standards. Having spent most of their last decade in the Premier League, being content with a campaign in the second tier sits uneasily with fans and staff alike.
While it may not look good on the surface, Robinson’s comment makes perfect sense when one considers how hard‑fought Southampton’s current situation has been.

At one point early this season, the Saints stood on the brink of the relegation zone. With ex‑boss Will Still leaving the team in 21st place, the current ranking is honourable and appreciable.
What makes the turnaround further heroic is that it wasn’t a seamless rise even under boss Tonda Eckert. After taking the permanent job, his side experienced a dip until the winter additions of Peretz, Bree and Larin helped steady the ship.
Given those challenges, Southampton can only be grateful to Eckert and everyone involved in this heroic turnaround. Though Premier League promotion remains the aim, the club should continue the project the same way even if they fail to reach the top flight this term.
For now, the best approach could be to take each game as it comes. Winning should always be the target, but the players and staff have done a commendable job and have nothing to be ashamed of.
Robinson’s return adds another option at Tonda Eckert’s disposal
Beyond helping teammates and staff appreciate the scale of their turnaround, Robinson’s return brings another advantage for Southampton.
Jay Robinson is one of the brightest prodigies at Southampton. Having impressed with a terrific start in the Championship, Robinson forced comparisons with ex-Saints talent Tyler Dibling.
However, a mid‑season injury, combined with Léo Scienza’s excellent February form, pushed Robinson out of the spotlight.
In a blistering update, Jay Robinson is nearing full fitness. Having recovered from his quad injury, the winger will soon be available at boss Tonda Eckert’s disposal once again.
While Robinson could have had more opportunities had he returned during Scienza’s recent injury, his return still adds another valuable option to Southampton’s arsenal. A talented prodigy who excels in creative playmaking, he strengthens the left wing alongside Scienza and Edozie.
This is not forgetting how his versatility allows him to play a part in the central attacking midfield role too.
In short, Robinson’s return ahead of the final stretch feels like a new signing for Southampton. While he is expected to be available from the Arsenal Cup game, it remains to be seen how Tonda Eckert will use him in the weeks ahead.
