Southampton’s Léo Scienza leads the Championship statistic for most fouls won by a player in this campaign.
Southampton recently caught up with the injury list of their FA Cup quarter-final opponents, Arsenal. With the Gunners facing doubts over the availability of Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino and Noni Madueke, the Saints have a significant advantage heading into the matchday.
Comparatively, Southampton have a near clean bill of health. With fan favourite Léo Scienza expected to return against Arsenal in the FA Cup, the Saints will want to capitalise on this advantage in the home tie.
However, Scienza’s return comes with a cautious message to boss Tonda Eckert and Southampton. The FA Cup is not the primary goal at St. Mary’s in front of a wide-open playoff race. As such, Eckert needs to manage the Brazilian’s workload so that he can power Southampton to a strong league finish ahead.
That’s not all. Leo Scienza should be kept available for the playoffs as well, because if anything, the 27-year-old winger has shown he ranks among the biggest Championship difference-makers right now. 6 goals and 8 assists for Southampton across all competitions speak for themselves.
Now, a Championship stat has arrived that shows how much opponents fear Scienza and try everything to stop him. According to a report from Sporting Life FC, Leo Scienza tops the Championship charts as the most fouled player with 85 fouls drawn.
Léo Scienza is most fouled Championship player this season
Scienza tops the most fouls won by any player in the second division by a significant margin. While competition is fierce among the other top rankers, Scienza leads the charts by a commanding stretch of five fouls.
Though this tally is impressive enough in itself, it becomes even more so considering Scienza has played less than 2,000 minutes in the Championship season.
The primary factor behind Scienza’s staggering tally of 85 fouls won is that his season has been filled with performances like the one against Birmingham City. In the December clash against the Blues, Scienza won as many as seven fouls in the 90 minutes of play.
Apart from registering an assist on Finn Azaz’s goal, Scienza was phenomenal throughout the evening. His exceptional dribbling and chance‑creation forced Birmingham players to foul him as the only way to stop him.

It’s worth noting that such physical games have been far too common for Scienza this term. Just days before the Birmingham clash, he tormented Leicester by drawing six fouls in a single game.
Once again, his dribbling frustrated the opposition into fouling him repeatedly. Apart from registering Azaz for the 2-0 lead, Scienza drew multiple fouls, including a dangerous challenge from Aluko.
In the 5th minute, Aluko lunged in on Scienza to stop him from building and advancing a Southampton counterattack. The foul earned Aluko a booking, and Scienza played a part in reducing Leicester to 10 men after Aluko’s second challenge saw him sent off before half‑time.
Even setting aside those outlier games, Scienza has drawn four fouls on several other occasions. This explains his tally that reads 2.83 fouls won per Championship appearance, while winning 3.85 fouls per 90 minutes played.
Scienza’s foul-winning ability is bittersweet for fans
Seeing Léo Scienza top another Championship statistical category would make Saints fans immensely proud. However, the fan favourite’s foul-winning ability comes as a double-edged sword for Southampton.
There’s no doubt that Scienza’s ability has seen Saints win dangerous free kicks on crucial occasions. Having brilliant delivery specialists like Manning and aerial stars like Harwood-Bellis, Southampton has benefited from his fouls a lot.
But there’s an unrealised flipside to Scienza’s impressive ability. Whether against Birmingham, Leicester, or any opponent, his dribbling prowess leaves defenders so frustrated that they resort to serious challenges.
While Southampton have been fortunate not to see him injured often, Scienza’s fitness has been at risk multiple times this season.
That risk became reality when Scienza picked up his first injury against West Brom earlier in March. In trying to win the ball and keep possession, he pushed himself to the limit and came off worse in the collision.
If that wasn’t enough, Scienza then risked further damage by trying to get up and continue immediately after the challenge. The result was that Scienza’s availability was in doubt for the remainder of the season until boss Tonda Eckert hinted at an early recovery.
Overall, foul-winning ability is a distinctive tool in Scienza’s creative arsenal. But his playstyle invites constant fouls, and his fitness will remain at risk until Southampton reach the Premier League, where such challenges face stricter punishment.
