Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes makes a cheeky comparison to club legend Alan Shearer while looking back at his leading goal against Coventry City.
Southampton’s 2-1 victory over Coventry has been one of the most morale-boosting wins for the Saints this campaign. And rightly so, as a collective team effort saw the club become only the second side to beat the league leaders in their own backyard.
But while the win was important for Tonda Eckert and all involved, it held special significance for Flynn Downes. The midfielder marked his 100th appearance for Southampton by scoring the opening goal and earning Man of the Match honours.
Post-game, Downes reflected on his opening goal that cemented Southampton’s position against Coventry. The midfielder also made a cheeky comparison by placing his name alongside club icon Alan Shearer.
As posted by Southampton FC on X(formerly Twitter), Downes beamed: “Look at that. Can’t teach that I’ll tell you. Outside the boot as well. Look at the celebrations, look, little Alan Shearer.”
Flynn Downes makes valid Alan Shearer comparison
Very few players can even come close to Alan Shearer’s legacy in English football. Compared to the Premier League all-time Top Scorer, Downes is still making a name for himself.
However, Downes’s playful nod to the Southampton legend makes sense on multiple levels.
Notably, Flynn Downes’s goal against Coventry was a typical poacher’s finish. When the ball came off the post from Cyle Larin’s shot, Downes was in the right place at the right time to tap into an empty net.
While it wasn’t the most eye-catching goal, Downes followed it with an Alan Shearer hallmark. On his 100th appearance, the midfielder celebrated by raising his arm with a clenched fist, which is the iconic pose of the Premier League’s all-time top scorer.
Southampton fans know that Shearer debuted this celebration during his hat-trick on his first Saints start. Thereafter, the forward’s signature move has been replicated by many, and Downes became the latest to add his name to that list.
Additionally, it should be noted that Flynn Downes operated in a much more advanced role against Coventry compared to his previous appearances. This might be another reason the Saints midfielder drew comparison to attacking Premier League legend Alan Shearer.
Downes couldn’t do it any wrong in his milestone appearance
In every sense, Flynn Downes’s 100th appearance for Southampton was truly memorable. He scored the opening goal, delivered a Man of the Match performance, and even drew comparisons to Alan Shearer. It couldn’t have been much better for the Saints midfielder.
However, what went largely unnoticed is that Downes was also incredibly fortunate to avoid a multi-game suspension on his milestone appearance.
While Downes wasn’t involved in any offensive foul or misconduct, he punched the corner flag in a passionate celebration of his goal at the Coventry City Stadium. Later, he admitted to being lucky not to receive a booking for the act.
Downes confessed, looking back at the moment: “I could’ve got booked there for hitting the flag, couldn’t I?”
If Flynn Downes had been booked against Coventry, it would have been his 10th yellow card of the season, coming on the 37th matchday itself. Under EFL rules, that would have triggered an automatic two-game suspension.
This might have seen Downes being unavailable for the upcoming games against Norwich and Oxford United in the decisive stretch of the season. So far, Downes has been one of Tonda Eckert’s most trusted midfielders and losing him could have been extremely costly for the Saints.
Thankfully, Downes’ fortune saved him from a two‑game suspension on his milestone 100th appearance for Southampton.
