Southampton will need Premier League promotion to help facilitate the permanent signing of fan-favourite keeper Daniel Peretz.
Southampton’s turnaround in the second half of the season has been remarkable. While Tonda Eckert and his key players deserve plenty of credit, the impact of Sport Republic’s January additions should not be overlooked.
That’s because all of James Bree, Cyle Larin and Daniel Peretz have been a hit so far. In fact, the trio’s impact has been so immediately felt that there’s now a growing urgency to secure them on a long‑term basis.
Such calls are even louder in Peretz’s case. After the 25‑year‑old keeper’s heroic displays against Coventry and Norwich, Southampton fans are eager to see the club take a proactive approach to tie him down to a permanent deal.
While supporter enthusiasm is appreciated, securing Daniel Peretz’s services permanently may prove far more complicated than it appears. Journalist Alfie House has offered insight into Tonda Eckert’s reaction when asked about the keeper’s future.
Daily Echo Journalist Alfie House quoted, “Eckert said less on Daniel Peretz. But from what I know, club would still need to agree a contract with him if the option is activated.”
Peretz’s permanent deal is more complicated than it seems
It’s well known that Daniel Peretz has won over the entire Southampton fanbase. Despite playing just 15 games in a Saints shirt, the keeper has proved to be a night-and-day upgrade over the club’s previous keepers.
But while Saints fans demand Peretz’s permanent signing in unison, the keeper’s deal may be difficult to finalise.
That’s because, despite spending most of his time on the bench in recent years, Peretz remains under contract at Bayern Munich until 2028. If Saints want to sign him permanently, they’d need to agree a contract with Peretz’s entourage before considering him their long‑term keeper.

Reading between the lines of Alfie House’s update, Premier League football may be Southampton’s best chance of convincing Peretz to leave Bayern. Though the German giants would let him go for €8m, a top‑flight project could prove far more enticing to the in‑form keeper.
While Southampton’s failure to reach the Premier League this term wouldn’t necessarily rule out a deal, it might require certain guarantees for Peretz. Perhaps a commitment to push for automatic promotion from the very start of next season.
Notably, Daniel Peretz has already tasted European football with Maccabi Tel Aviv in the UEFA Europa Conference League and with Bayern in the Champions League. With such credentials, Peretz won’t compromise on his goal of becoming a top keeper by staying in the Championship for too long.
Saints moving swiftly towards PL promotion & Peretz’s move
One of the biggest positives from Southampton’s 12-game unbeaten streak is that they’ve started peaking at the perfect time in the Championship. While an automatic promotion may be a bit too far now, the Saints would be the strongest contenders if they reach the playoffs.
Additionally, Southampton have an edge when it comes to playoff experience. Having won promotion via the playoff final at Wembley just two years ago, they know exactly what it takes to repeat the feat.
Compare that to other playoff contenders like Hull, Millwall, and whichever side finishes between Ipswich and Middlesbrough, and Saints can run right through them to secure a Premier League berth. Not only will it help their Top Flight return mission, but it could also strengthen their case to secure Peretz permanently.
Premier League football may be the only thing that could tempt Peretz away from Bayern. Given his reluctance likely stems only from a desire not to linger in the second division, Peretz could be very open to Southampton’s permanent offer if they secure promotion.
In that sense, promotion would serve two missions at once. Saints fans would welcome it with both hands, especially if it means returning confidently to the Premier League with a reliable Peretz between the sticks.
