Southampton demands at least €20m from interested suitors for fan-favourite winger Léo Scienza’s summer transfer.
Ever since Léo Scienza was forced off against West Brom, his fitness has been a growing concern at St. Mary’s. Though Southampton have gone on to conquer Coventry on their own turf, fans remain eager for an update on the winger’s condition.
In that regard, Tonda Eckert’s latest update on Léo Scienza will be welcomed by the Saints faithful. The manager downplayed any serious concerns by confirming that the winger is up and preparing for the Norwich game.
As quoted by journalist Alfie House, Tonda Eckert mentioned: “Leo Scienza and Ross Stewart have been on the pitch today. We will see tomorrow.”
While Tonda’s words will reassure Saints fans, it arrives alongside a potentially worrying development. Léo Scienza’s return to fitness has coincided with significant transfer interest ahead of the summer window.
According to SaintsExtra, Sky Sports has confirmed concrete interest in Léo Scienza from clubs across Europe. The outlet reported: “Southampton’s Leo Scienza is the subject of enquiries from clubs in the Premier League, Serie A, La Liga & Brazil — Saints would demand ‘at least €20m’ [£17.3m] for any move.”
Léo Scienza’s transfer rumour will annoy fans
Southampton’s 2025/26 campaign has been one of a kind for fans from a transfer perspective. Unlike the previous seasons, the club has had far more winners than losers out of all the players they went for.
In fact, aside from the rare exception of Damion Downs, Southampton chief Johannes Spors has done an exceptional job by ticking a lot of boxes this time around. While this deserves praise, the chief won’t want to go against the club faithful by letting go of a fan-favourite like Scienza.
Notably, Spors had been key to scouting Léo Scienza. Aware of the player’s talent from his previous spells at Schalke and SSV Ulm, Spors was instrumental in bringing Scienza to St Mary’s for a fee of around €9m.
While Saints fans will be ever grateful to Spors for finding such a gem from the German market, replacing Scienza is near impossible for them.
A technically gifted player with genuine Brazilian dribbling flair, Scienza is one of the most exciting players fans have seen at St. Mary’s in years. Even if a €20m offer would represent a significant profit on their initial outlay, Southampton would struggle to find a better replacement.
Though the summer transfer window is some time away, fans will want Southampton to take a firm stance on the rumours surrounding Léo Scienza. Whether the Saints go up to the Premier League or not, keeping hold of Scienza would send a clear statement about the club’s long-term project.
How much is Léo Scienza worth in today’s transfer market?
Ask Saints fans, and the consensus would be to not hear rumours of Scienza’s departure again. But they’d also be frustrated to learn the club set a reported minimum fee of just €20m for his sale.
In the current transfer market, wingers who can create a real threat with their dribbling skills are exceedingly rare. Needless to say, top clubs are willing to get such players for even skyrocketing prices.
If nothing else, Southampton’s sale of Kamaldeen Sulemana last summer sets a useful benchmark.
Despite Sulemana being a flop for most of his Saints life, Southampton were able to collect around €18m for his sale. The Saints offloaded him to a UCL-competing Atalanta side, a side that valued his ability to create danger from wide areas.
Given Léo Scienza’s current form and his productivity in the final third, his value already exceeds €30m. Factor in that he has over three years remaining on his Southampton contract, and a realistic valuation for a top club could land somewhere between €40m and €50m.
Interestingly, that valuation could only increase if Southampton secures Premier League promotion this season.
While a sale worth this package could fund a major overhaul for Southampton, fans will oppose the idea wholeheartedly. If the Saints end up striking a deal to sell Scienza this summer, it would be against their intent to return to their glory days.
