Shea Charles has snubbed his 2-0 Oxford United strike from the most important goal of Southampton’s 2025/26 season.
First February and now March has also gone as a perfect month for Southampton. The Saints won every Championship fixture lined up, except the West Brom one, which is an impressive feat regardless.
And with this flawless run, Southampton fans have also got a potential Goal of the Season contender in the 2-0 Oxford United rout. The U’s had bounced back well from their relegation-battle misery with 4 consecutive unbeaten results.
On top of that, Tonda Eckert’s men were frustrated away to West Brom in the 1-1 draw ten days ago. These reasons were enough to call the Oxford United clash a likely banana skin for Southampton.

Amidst all these fears, Tom Fellows combined with Cyle Larin to send a 1-0 relief to the home fans. The game wasn’t over yet. Saints still needed the 2-0 cushion to assert more control over the 3 points.

Up stepped Shea Charles. The 22-year-old has overseen an up-and-down campaign so far with different coaches, injuries and a constantly changing midfield. Still, Charles has got that knack of coming clutch with important goals on big occasions.
Only this season, Charles bagged a Carabao Cup 1-1 equaliser at Anfield which Southampton later lost 2-1 to Liverpool. Charles was an impact sub at King Power last month to turn the 3-3 Leicester City fightback more sweeter at 4-3 in injury time.
Here at home, the box-to-box midfielder latched onto a diagonal pass from Cameron Archer to send a curling top-corner flying into the Oxford United net.
Shea Charles snubs Oxford United strike as most important goal
1-0 goals are always vital in Championship football. So are 2-0 goals that bring the team one step closer to the victory, and to playoffs in Southampton’s case. And an unbelievable strike like Shea Charles will definitely go down as the most important goal of the season in Southampton fans eyes.

For Shea Charles himself, that doesn’t. The Northern Irish international has named his pick for the most valuable goal he has scored for the Saints, and sadly, it’s not the Oxford United long-ranger.
In his own words, the Daily Echo quoted Shea Charles saying: “But for the occasion, I think the one against Leicester [was better], you know, last minute, coming back from 3-0 down, that was incredible as well.”
It feels quite strange to recall that Southampton were rotting at 14th in the Championship when they faced Leicester City in the 4-3 fightback. Until January, the Saints often sat around the Foxes and it was then believed that only one of them might be able to mount a last-gasp playoffs push towards the end of the season.
Agreed, Leicester City’s 6 point deduction played a part. But Southampton might not have got used to winning games against anyone and from any situation had Shea Charles not scored the 4-3 that day.
Seven games are still left to go in the league. Let’s hope for more Shea Charles goals and Championship wins coming Southampton’s way.
