Southampton midfielder Shea Charles draws an interesting Coventry win parallel with Northern Ireland’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Italy.
It’s been a few days since the March international break kicked in, and while the action has yet to start, Saints fans won’t have to wait much longer. That’s because four Saints, Daniel Peretz, Manning, Finn Azaz and Shea Charles will be in action on 26th March.
While fans will cheer for all of them, the spotlight will be on Shea Charles when he lines up for Northern Ireland against Italy in a mammoth World Cup qualifier.
It’s worth noting that despite being 22 years old, Charles has already collected 31 national caps for Northern Ireland. The defensive midfielder is an untouchable starter for manager Michael O’Neill’s playing setup.
Charles’ importance can be judged from the fact that his late arrival at the national camp raised doubts over whether he would be ready to start against Italy. However, the midfielder handled the situation confidently by backing himself with his Southampton experience.
As quoted by the Daily Echo, Shea Charles said: “Not having a lot of preparation time won’t mean too much for us, and we play big games for our clubs. Games here, like Coventry, will help me.”
Charles makes interesting Coventry admission for WC qualifiers
It’s been a frantic schedule for Shea Charles recently. After starting for Southampton as recently as the 21st March matchday, he had to rush to join the national camp to begin preparations for the World Cup qualifiers on 23rd March.
But while Charles has had minimal time to train and prepare for Italy, his experience of managing a packed schedule at Southampton should serve him well.
The defensive midfielder has already been playing games for the Saints with just three days between them. Having thrived in that tight schedule, stepping into a World Cup qualifier days after joining camp shouldn’t faze Charles.

Further, Shea Charles’ experience of crucial club games like the win against Coventry will come in handy on the international stage, too.
Just as Italy are a massive test for Northern Ireland, Coventry were a significant hurdle for Southampton. While Northern Ireland’s World Cup entry is on the line against Italy, the Saints needed a win against Coventry to continue their promotion push.
Despite the high stakes involved, Southampton defeated Frank Lampard’s Coventry on their own ground. Shea Charles would hope to repeat a similar feat with the national side by defeating Italy in their backyard.
Shea Charles would wish for a better display Vs Italy than Coventry game
Charles’s experience against Coventry offers a useful parallel for Northern Ireland’s semi‑final with Italy. While the midfielder will be hoping for a similar result, Charles wouldn’t necessarily want a repeat of his own performance that day.
Southampton’s trip to Coventry wasn’t Charles’ best evening of the season. Despite starting from the bench, Charles almost became the villain when he came on as a substitute.
Shea Charles was introduced by Tonda Eckert in the 67th minute with Southampton leading 1‑0. Though the Saints added a second during his time on the pitch, a stoppage‑time blunder from the midfielder cut their lead in half.
Charles stomped on Coventry attacker Victor Torp’s foot inside the box. The foul saw Southampton concede a spot kick, which Torp converted to make it 2‑1 and bring the game back to life.
Despite this mistake, Charles’ cameo was praised for one final contribution in the Coventry game. He won a tactical foul in the final moments that helped the Saints to see out the game comfortably.
Overall, Shea Charles’ takeaway is to be cautious not to commit any such blunder against Italy in the World Cup qualifier. Being Northern Ireland’s best midfielder, the 22-year-old holds responsibility to get his side through against a mighty opponent.
