Southampton fan-favourite Léo Scienza picked up a severe groin injury in the recent trip to West Bromwich in a 1-1 draw.
Southampton would consider themselves fortunate to have snatched a point against West Brom. Though it fell short of the win they’d hoped for against a relegation-battling West Brom side, the fans will take it, given that it closes the gap to the 6th playoff spot.
But while a header from Cyle Larin salvaged a point, the trip to West Brom was one fans will want to forget. That’s because fan favourite Léo Scienza was forced off with what appeared to be a serious groin injury.
Boss Tonda Eckert didn’t sound optimistic in his post-match update on Scienza. While scans and reports have yet to arrive, Eckert gave his initial assessment to the BBC, saying: “It looked like the groin, but I don’t know how serious it is as of now.”
Tonda Eckert added, “We’ll have to assess it over the next few days, we still can’t say too much for now.”
Léo Scienza injury
As usual, Léo Scienza started the West Bromwich clash in his magical rhythm. Before picking up an injury, Scienza created a couple of opportunities for Ross Stewart to finish up front.
But not only was Léo Scienza unlucky not to register an assist, but the fan favourite also saw his afternoon cut short after injuring himself in a challenge in the 37th minute.
Misfortune struck Scienza as he tried to keep possession of a pass from teammate Ryan Manning. As Scienza stepped in to shield the ball from a rushing West Brom opponent, he felt a sharp pain after the challenge.
Being the passionate player he is, Léo Scienza got up and tried running back to recover the lost possession, but he couldn’t continue and fell to the ground. The attacker was eventually forced off after the medical staff deemed him unable to continue.
Ultimately, a former West Bromwich player, Tom Fellows, replaced Léo Scienza upfront for Southampton.
How will Léo Scienza’s injury affect Saints promotion push?
Léo Scienza has been Southampton’s best player this season by far. Apart from his exceptional 14-goal contributions, the star player has earned a reputation as a fan favourite for the way he leaves his heart on the pitch every game.
Not only is Scienza’s injury detrimental to the Saints, but it comes at the worst possible time.
That’s because the recent weeks had statistically been Scienza’s best period in a Southampton shirt. With 5 G/A in February, the player had deservedly earned a PFA Player of the Month nomination.
Needless to say, Southampton are going to feel Léo Scienza’s absence a lot ahead of the final stretch of the season. What makes it even more worrying is that the initial signs don’t look very good for Scienza and Southampton.
If Scienza is sidelined for a month or more, Southampton’s playoff hopes could take a severe hit. Fans will hope otherwise, but there’s a real chance his league campaign is already over.
While Léo Scienza might return in time for the playoffs, this possibility requires Southampton to reach Wembley in his absence. Now, it all depends on how the Saints fare without him in their push for the playoffs.
Who should replace Léo Scienza at Southampton?
Léo Scienza’s untimely injury opens up several possibilities in a previously undisputed role at Southampton. Given that boss Tonda Eckert sticks to his 4-2-3-1 system going ahead, the club have as many as three options to replace the irreplaceable Scienza.
These are two natural options in Sam Edozie and Jay Robinson, apart from a possible makeshift in attacker Kuryu Matsuki.
Despite having several options at his disposal, Tonda Eckert would want to go with Edozie as the first choice. Ever since his reintegration into the first team setup, Edozie has shown flashes of his brilliance.
Samuel Edozie’s impact was on full display in his recent cameo against West Brom. Despite playing just 25 minutes, the winger provided a crucial assist for Cyle Larin’s late equaliser.
After receiving the ball from Manning on the wing, Edozie created a chance for Larin almost single-handedly. He dropped his shoulder to cut inside before delivering a perfect cross to Cyle Larin, who headed home to secure a crucial point for the Saints.
This standout cameo aside, Samuel Edozie possesses a top-flight pedigree and experience over the only other natural alternative, Jay Robinson. The remaining option of Kuryu Matsuki can be ruled out, as Tonda would be reluctant to disturb Matsuki from his recently found right-midfield role.
Overall, Edozie feels like Southampton’s best short-term option to fill in during Scienza’s absence. While the 23-year-old’s performances will decide how this call might work out, his cameo against West Bromwich deserves a start against Coventry up next.
